Robotic jellyfish may never run out of energy

A robot built to look and swim like an inconspicuous jellyfish may keep going and going and going thanks to an infinite source of fuel -- its surroundings.

The power comes from heat-producing chemical reactions between oxygen and hydrogen with platinum coated on the surface of the bio-inspired robot, known as RoboJelly.

The heat is transferred to the artificial muscles in the robot, causing them to contract just as real muscle does in a jellyfish, the Virginia Tech team behind RoboJelly explains in a paper published Wednesday in the journal Smart Materials.

The muscles are little wires called shape memory alloy composites that are built on the inside of the jellyfish-like robot frame.

In the robot, as in real jellyfish, the contraction of the muscles cause the bell-shape disc to close in on itself, generating thrust. After contracting, the bell relaxes and regains its original shape.

Last November, we?reported the team improved Robojelly's propulsion?by adding a flap at the lower, bottom section of the bell to better mimic the real jellyfish.

In earlier versions of the robot, batteries or an external source of electricity powered the muscles. But the artificial muscles are energy hogs, which sent the researchers looking for an alternative. Hydrogen, noted Alex Villanueva, a team member, is a more energy dense fuel than a battery, meaning you can store more energy in your robot.

With the new system, "you don't need any electricity, you just need to have hydrogen and oxygen flow over your actuators,"?Villanueva told me on Tuesday.?

"The other cool thing about it is we're going to be swimming in water. What's water? It's hydrogen and oxygen. So you've got an infinite source of fuel," he added.

The caveat is that the water needs to be converted into hydrogen and oxygen, "and that requires power," Villanueva noted, "So there are definitely things we still need to look into."

One possibility is a solar-powered fueling station resting on top of the water, which uses electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Whenever the Robojelly gets low on fuel, it could swim to station for a refill.

With such a system in place everyone -- from military personnel interested in deploying Robojelly to spy on enemy submarines to environmentalists checking water quality along the coast -- can send their robot to work and know it will keep working and working and working until the job is done.

Bring ABA into Inclusive Classrooms Instead of Sending Students ...

As you may have already figured out by the title of my book and my previous blog posts, one of my missions is to help educators and caregivers learn how to design meaningful ABA interventions that can be implemented within everyday home, school, and community routines. More and more special schools (segregated settings) for children with ASD are opening up across the country to provide 1:1 ABA instruction. The problem I have with this is that these children are missing out on thousands of learning opportunities that occur in inclusive classrooms and inclusive schools. The reason why these schools keep popping up is that there is strong research support for ABA interventions for kids with ASD, and the truth of the matter is public schools typically do not provide intensive ABA interventions for kids with ASD within the context of general education classrooms (or even special education classrooms). So, private or publicly funded schools are setting up camp to deliver 1:1 ABA interventions. Here?s one very important word of caution, though: While there is research support for the use of ABA interventions with kids with ASD, there is also research that documents that many kids do not maintain and generalize skills being learned when they are taught outside of the environments in which they will use them. Children may not maintain or generalize skills taught in isolation because the contexts in the natural environment are so significantly different from the therapeutic setting. They also may not maintain or generalize skills taught in isolation if the skills being learned are not meaningful and useful across contexts. All ABA intervention program goals should be able to answer the ?So what?? question: If the child masters the goal, so what? How will it positively impact the child?s life and/or the life of those the child interacts with? If this question cannot be answered, the goal should not be included in the child?s program.

Now that I shared my thoughts on segregated schools and 1:1 ABA therapy in isolation, I would like to share an alternative approach to providing ABA interventions for children with ASD. Early intervention professionals are familiar with Activity Based Interventions or Activity Based Instruction (ABI) and Routines-Based Intervention (RBI) (see the work of Diane Bricker and Robin McWilliam for more info). These approaches provide a framework for embedding individualized interventions for young children with disabilities within the context of everyday routines and activities in the home, school, and community. It is my very strong opinion that we should use frameworks such as these to embed ABA interventions within natural contexts for young children with ASD and school-age children as well. We know that children learn best when they are actively engaged in everyday routines and activities. However, it may be difficult to engage children with ASD in everyday routines across home, school, and community contexts without the use of ABA interventions and other active engagement strategies. Merging ABA interventions with ABI and RBI is a wonderful way to provide intensive ABA interventions within the natural environment. This allows children to learn within everyday contexts without having to be segregated from their typically developing peers and removed from classrooms that provide rich learning opportunities. Below, I summarized the steps discussed in detail in my book (Bringing ABA into Your Inclusive Classroom: http://www.brookespublishing.com/store/books/leach-70779/index.htm) that a BCBA or other professional with expertise in ABA and special education can follow for designing ABA interventions for implementation in the natural environment:

1: Conduct assessments (strengths/interests; present levels of performance for all domains that will be addressed in the ABA intervention program; parent and teacher priorities; list of everyday classroom, home, and/or community routines).

2: Set ABA intervention goals that are meaningful, observable, measurable, positively stated, developmentally appropriate, and have a criteria for mastery

3: Design ABA interventions that can be implemented across a variety of home, school, and/or community contexts and align data collection procedures. Consider the strengths and interests of the student when designing interventions.

4: Create a matrix that lists the ABA goals horizontally and the everyday routines vertically and put x?s in the boxes to indicate which goals will be implemented during which routines. For example, during small group reading the teacher may be able to address communication goals, social goals, behavioral goals, and/or academic goals.

5: Provide training, modeling, and coaching to the primary interventionist (teacher or caregiver) to assist with implementing the ABA interventions within the context of everyday routines and provide support with data collection procedures.

6: Monitor the student?s progress at least bi-weekly to make instructional decisions.

NASA's Cassini mission has delivered a dark but dramatically backlit view of "Spaceship Enceladus": an icy moon of Saturn with geysers of water ice spewing from its south polar region, as if it were turning on its thrusters.

Enceladus isn't going anywhere, of course, but the geysers have launched a lot of speculation about what might be giving rise to the spray. Is water from a hidden ocean welling up through the cracks known as "tiger stripes"? If so, what creatures might lurk in that subsurface sea?

The picture released today by Cassini's imaging team fires up the imagination, even for team leader Carolyn Porco. "Now try to tell me Enceladus isn't the coolest, most fascinating moon there is!" she said in a Twitter update touting the view.

Really? But what about Europa, an icy moon of Jupiter that is also thought to harbor a subsurface ocean, and perhaps life. A probe to study Europa is high on NASA's list of future big-ticket missions, even though such missions are currently on hold due to budgetary constraints. (There's also some recent research suggesting that Europa's hidden ocean might be too acidic for life as we know it.)

Porco made her preference plain in a volley of tweets: "Enceladus, with the most accessible habitable zone beyond Earth, is far better for discovering anything about life than Europa."

NASA is said to be planning a concept study for an eventual Enceladus mission, although tight budgets may force a change of plan. The German Aerospace Center recently unveiled a study project known as Enceladus Explorer, or EnEx, which is looking at the possibility of putting a base station on the moon's surface and drilling down into the ice. The concept calls for a type of probe known as an IceMole to melt its way down to a water crevasse, retrieve a sample of liquid water and analyze it for the presence of microbes.

EnEx's collaborators have been testing a prototype IceMole on Switzerland's Morteratsch Glacier, and they're planning to try it out on glaciers in Alaska and Antarctica, leading up to the sampling of a subglacial lake in Antarctica in 2014. If those tests are successful, the team will propose sending IceMoles to Mars and eventually to Enceladus.

Enceladus isn't the only star of this week's Saturnian show. Fresh pictures of Saturn's second-largest moon, Rhea, were released as well. House Republican Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia, a Romney supporter, said Wednesday that Romney's claim to the nomination is inevitable, adding that Santorum and Gingrich "have not demonstrated an ability to do what needs to be done." But in a morning interview on CBS "This Morning," Cantor acknowledged there is still plenty of ongoing debate in "a robust party with many ideas."

Obama chose the busiest day of the GOP race to speak from the presidential bully pulpit, where he dismissed the Republicans' almost constant criticism of his administration.

"Those folks don't have a lot of responsibilities," Obama said in a White House news conference. "They're not commander in chief."

Gingrich's win in Georgia, which he represented for several terms in Congress, was his first victory since he captured the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21. The former House speaker said it would propel him on yet another comeback,

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, still in search of his first victory of the nomination battle, had pinned his hopes on winning Idaho and Alaska but fell short in both.

Ohio was the marquee matchup, and for good reason. No Republican has won the presidency without carrying the state in the general election. It was a second industrial-state showdown in as many weeks between Romney and Santorum and drew the most campaigning and television advertisements of the 10 Super Tuesday states.

With 99 percent of Ohio precincts reporting, Romney had 38 percent to Santorum's 37 percent, an uncomfortably close margin for a candidate who had spent nearly four times as much money as his rival in the state.

Romney spent $1.5 million in television advertisements and Restore Our Future, a super PAC that supports him, spent an additional $2.3 million. Santorum and Red, White and Blue, a super PAC that supports him, countered with about $1 million combined, according to information on file with the Federal Election Commission.

Romney won among working women; Santorum won among women who do not work.
