See the Super Bowl Ads?Before the Super Bowl

You used to have to wait for Super Bowl Sunday to see the Super Bowl ads?and many viewers still tune in to see which celebrity will be endorsing which product in an innovative and outrageous way that just might justify the millions of dollars companies spend on 30-second spots. These days, however, advertisers are increasingly debuting advertisements well before the big game, which makes the products and commercials topics for discussion long before kickoff.

Our ad critic, Seth Stevenson, prefers to view the ads within the context of Super Bowl evening, so he'll be weighing in with his reviews first thing Monday morning. Until then, check out some of the spots that have debuted early and either air your thoughts in the comments section or email them to seth@sethstevenson.com?he'll factor your reactions into his post.

Yemini military: Town seized from al-Qaida

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? The Yemeni military says it has wrested control of a southern town from al-Qaida fighters after three days of clashes that killed 17 people.

Military officials say 12 al-Qaida fighters were killed and five soldiers and members of local tribes fighting alongside the army died in the clashes. Local militiamen had joined the military offensive to push al-Qaida out of the mountainous al-Maraksha in Abyan province.

Tribal sources say the al-Qaida fighters fled al-Maraksha Saturday to East Ahwar, about 80 kilometers outside the Abyan provincial capital of Zinjibar.

All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Last year, Yemen's army, backed by the United States, drove militants out of southern areas that al-Qaida had seized during Yemen's 2011 uprising.

(AP) ? Schoolchildren joined NASA managers and relatives of the lost crew of space shuttle Columbia on Friday to mark the 10th anniversary of the tragedy and remember the seven astronauts who died.

More than 300 people gathered at Kennedy Space Center for the outdoor ceremony, just a few miles from where Columbia was supposed to land on Feb. 1, 2003, following a 16-day science mission. It never made it, bursting apart in the sky over Texas, just 16 minutes from home.

Representing the families of the Columbia seven, the widow of commander Rick Husband told the hushed audience that the accident was so unexpected and the shock so intense, "that even tears were not freely able to fall."

"They would come in the weeks, months and years to follow in waves and in buckets," said Evelyn Husband Thompson.

She assured everyone, though, that healing is possible and that blessings can arise from hardships. She attended the ceremony with her two children, her second husband and Sandra Anderson, widow of Columbia astronaut Michael Anderson.

"God bless the families of STS-107," said Thompson, referring to the mission designation for Columbia's last mission. "May our broken hearts continue to heal and may beauty continue to replace the ashes."

A pair of songs added to the emotion of the day. The young nephew of a NASA worker performed a song he wrote, "16 Minutes from Home," on the keyboard, along with a vocalist. And Grammy award-winning BeBe Winans, an R&B and gospel singer, performed "Ultimate Sacrifice," which he wrote for soldiers serving overseas.

As it turns out, Anderson had taken a CD of Winans' music into orbit with him. It was recovered in the debris that rained down on East Texas that fateful morning. Winans did not know that until it was mentioned at Friday's ceremony.

"I honor you today, I really do honor the families and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice," he added. Some in the crowd wiped away tears as he sang.

Also present were 44 students from Israel, the homeland of Columbia astronaut Ilan Ramon. He was Israel's first astronaut.

The teenagers were proud to note that they go to the same school as Ramon once did. They wore white sweat shirts with an emblem of their nation's first spaceman and the religious items he took into orbit.

"He represented Israel in the best way possible, so I think it's an honor for us to be here," said Eden Mordechai, 15.

The other Columbia crew members were co-pilot William McCool, Kalpana Chawla, Dr. Laurel Clark and Dr. David Brown.

NASA's human exploration chief, Bill Gerstenmaier, said no single person or event caused the Columbia disaster. Rather, "a series of technical and cultural missteps" were to blame, dating back to the first shuttle launch in 1981 when fuel-tank foam insulation started coming off and doing damage.

A chunk of foam punched a hole in Columbia's left wing during liftoff, leading to the catastrophic re-entry.

The astronaut who led the charge back to shuttle flight two years later, Eileen Collins, stressed that the 30-year shuttle program had its share of successes along the way and achieved its ultimate goal, building the International Space Station. The shuttles were retired in 2011.

"We still miss you," Collins said of the Columbia seven. "How can we ever thank you for your contributions to the great journey of human discovery."

The hourlong ceremony was held in front of the huge black granite monument bearing the names of all 24 astronauts who have died in the line of NASA duty. The three-man crew of Apollo 1 died in the Jan. 27, 1967, launch pad fire. The Challenger seven were killed Jan. 28, 1986, during liftoff. Husband and his crew honored them during their own flight, just four days before dying themselves.

On Friday, the names of each of the dead were read aloud. Afterward, mourners placed carnations and roses on the grating in front of the mirror-faced monument.

"I felt compelled to be here to memorialize those who were a big part of my life," said David Nieds, 39, a grocery store manager who got up early to drive from Fort Lauderdale with his mother and 16-year-old nephew.

He attended dozens of launches. Some people like sports, he explained, while he follows the space program.

Memorial services also were held at Arlington National Cemetery, where three of the Columbia crew are buried; in East Texas, where the shuttle wreckage fell; and in Israel.

"Space exploration and the sacrifice these pioneers made benefits us all," President Barack Obama said in a statement. "Today, we honor their lives and recommit ourselves to living up to their shining example."

Gene finding may lead to treatments effective against all MRSA strains

Jan. 31, 2013 ? In the last decade, a new strain of MRSA has emerged that can spread beyond hospital walls, putting everyone at risk of contracting the dangerous bacterial infection. This particular strain of MRSA -- known as USA300 -- contains a chunk of genes not shared by any other strains, though it is unclear how this unique genetic material enables the bacteria to survive and persist in the community.

Now, research from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine has pinpointed a gene that causes the infection to linger on the skin longer than other strains, allowing it to be passed more readily from one person to the next.

The gene makes this strain of MRSA resistant to specific compounds on the skin called polyamines that are toxic to other forms of the bacteria. In uncovering this property, researchers have identified a novel target for developing new treatments against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, particularly the USA300 strain that accounts for the vast majority of MRSA skin and soft tissue infections seen in emergency rooms.

"The problem is by the time you figure out how one strain comes into dominance, it often fades away and a new strain comes in. But because these compounds occur naturally and are so toxic, we still think they can lead to treatments that are effective against all MRSA. We will just have to put in a little extra work to block the gene and make this particular strain of MRSA susceptible to polyamines," said senior study author Anthony Richardson, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at the UNC School of Medicine.

The UNC study, published Jan. 16, 2013, in the journal Cell Host & Microbe, follows an attribute of MRSA previously unexplored by other scientists -- its sensitivity to the naturally occurring compounds called polyamines.

Polyamines are critical to wound repair because they are anti-inflammatory and promote tissue regeneration. Scientists first observed that MRSA infections were killed by polyamines in the 1950s, but no one followed up until recently, when Richardson decided to twist this scientific observation into a treatment option.

He and his colleagues tested hundreds of MRSA strains and found that all of them except one -- USA300 -- were sensitive to polyamines. When they looked to see what was different about this particular strain, they found that it contained a chunk of 34 genes, called the arginine catabolic mobile element (ACME), that none of the other strains possessed.

Then the researchers mutated each of these genes, one by one, until they created a strain that could be killed off by the polyamines. To confirm that they had the right gene, the researchers added a normal, non-mutated version of the gene -- named SpeG -- to other strains of MRSA and showed that it could make them resistant to these compounds.

Finally, Richardson wanted to know if the gene exerts the same effects in the context of a real infection. Using mouse models of MRSA infection, he and his colleagues showed that the presence of the SpeG gene helped the potent USA300 strain to stay on the skin for anywhere from a day to a week, giving the infection time to spread to the next host.

"Previously, the field tried to understand MRSA by focusing on attributes that we already knew were important, such as the amount of toxins or virulence factors a given strain makes. Those elements may explain why the disease is so bad when you get it, but they don't explain how a particular strain takes over. Our work uncovers the molecular explanation for one strain's rapid and efficient spread to people outside of a crowded hospital setting," said Richardson.

The research was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Study co-authors from UNC include Lance R. Thurlow, PhD; Gauri S. Joshi, PhD; Justin R. Clark; Jeffrey S. Spontak; Crystal J. Neeley; and Robert Maile, PhD.

My current feelings on the skeptical movement and blogging ? Blag ...

I must not be the only one feeling disenchanted, since all of these other people can speak perfectly for me. From PZ, in response to Steven Novella?s piece about the scope of skepticism:

As for that awful, dishonest, destructive claim that ?Political, moral, and social ideology are ?outside the scope? of skepticism because they remove objectivity? ? I ask, OK, so would you claim that there is no rational, evidence-based argument against, say, slavery? That it is impossible to make an objective argument in any domain against treating people as property?

If that?s the case, well then, fuck skepticism. It isn?t relevant or useful anymore. It has abstracted itself into the realm of a private academic circle-jerk, and we can stop arguing, because just maybe atheists, who apparently have more rational minds, can just leave the party voluntarily.

Improbable Joe responds to the second paragraph with this comment:

A-fucking-men! If all that skepticism is for is dismissing the same silly claims that have been dismissed for sometimes hundreds of years, and not for creating positive change in the world, then what goddamned use does it have? ?Hey, let?s all get in a room once a week and talk about how homeopathy is still quackery, and that Bigfoot is a hoax! And then we can pat each other on the back for still not believing the same daffy shit we didn?t believe last week, and didn?t believe the week before either!? Wow, yeah, that?s really inspiring me to join a ?movement? that seems to be fixated on not moving, not budging a single solitary inch, if in doing so it moves beyond smug self-congratulation.

And to close, sawells perfectly summarizes why I?m sick of dealing with the skeptic movement:

I think there are two unspoken arguments which people want to make and can?t (publicly).

Argument 1: skepticism is fine if you point it at things which very few people really believe (bigfoot;alien abduction) because if they get angry we can laugh at them. Don?t point it at things which lots of people believe! There are lots of them and if they get angry that might be scary!

Argument 2: skepticism is fine if you point it at other people who are wrong. Don?t point it at me! I?m not wrong!

Hence the massive pushback against applying basic skepticism to things like mainstream religious claims and mainstream gender stereotypes.

This. Oh, so much this.

I?ve grown reluctant to deal with the egos of skeptic celebrities and politics of skeptical organizations who, frankly, aren?t the great skeptics they think they are. But I?ll still keep writing and speaking about science and skepticism because, well, I find them important and interesting. I?ve realized I don?t need to be an official part of a group or a movement to do those things, nor am I personally responsible for spending my time and energy in improving a movement that is so stubbornly resisting improvement.

Because when my time and energy is spent on repeatedly explaining why diversity matters, why harassment policies are good to have and are already widely implemented at other events, why Obviously Sexist Statement from Skeptic Pope X is problematic, and why certain topics are not exempt from skepticism?then I don?t have the time to write about those certain topics that matter to me. I don?t have time to create unique material about science and skepticism when I?m stuck meta-blogging about how some atheist yet again told me to go kill myself on twitter because I?m an ugly bitch who?s ruining skepticism.

And I didn?t realize how obnoxious this meta-blogging was until I took a break from blogging and spent some time as just a blog reader. All of the blogs I had once loved now hardly ever produce unique material about atheism or skepticism because they?re too busy reacting to trolls or debating some ?big name skeptic? (who is really just some shmuck* only known to a small group of people whose opinions have little effect on the world at large). Even the rare unique posts are frequently filled with snide offhand remarks about people they don?t like or vague comments alluding to past drama. And you know, if that?s what they want to do, that?s fine. One of my main pet peeves as a blogger is when people tell you what you should be writing about, when it?s a blogger?s prerogative to write about whatever they find interesting.

I personally no longer find the meta-blogging interesting.

So consider this meta-meta-blogging my long-winded way of saying that my attitude toward blogging is changing. From now on, trolls and haters will be ignored instead of further publicized, and I encourage my readers to do the same in the comments. I will not feel guilty about moderation or banning in order to make a harassment-free environment for me and my readers. I will only comment on controversies if I feel that they have effects outside of our tiny little skeptical bubble. And most importantly, I will concentrate on writing unique material about the topics I care about instead of just endlessly replying to blogs, comments, and tweets.

That?s what I want to spend my time and energy on, not fixing a stubborn skeptical movement?s academic circle jerk.

*I count myself in the category of ?random shmuck that other people care way too much about.? I wish my haters would spend less time obsessing over what?s effectively an open access creative writing journal for a random grad student, and maybe take up some sort of constructive hobby, like actually promoting science and skepticism, or at the very least, knitting.

The taste for indie games consoles has grown over the past twelve months with contenders such as Ouya managing to nail down $7 million in funding and partner with iHeartRadio, VEVO and OnLive.

As we mentioned in January, GameStick reached its funding target in just 30 hours. The product supports?XBMC media hub software and the DLNA media sharing spec.

GameStick is described as ?The Most Portable TV games Console Ever Created? and will cost $79. Essentially a 2-inch stick that fits inside a controller, users will be able to play games on a regular TV.

On the company?s Facebook page it is clear that the team is very excited to have come this far with its Kickstarter campaign.

Timbuktu revels in new freedom but fears linger

TIMBUKTU, Mali (AP) ? A leaflet listing the regulations for women under Islamist rule now lies in dirt here at the tribunal in Timbuktu. Rule No. 1: The veil should cover the entire body. Rule No. 4: The veil cannot be colored. And Rule No. 8: The woman should not perfume herself after putting on the all-enveloping fabric.

Several days after French special forces parachuted in and liberated this storied city, there is a growing sense of freedom. Though in the houses immediately facing the Islamic tribunal, many of the 8- and 9-year-old girls are still wearing the head covering.

"It is out of fear of the Islamists that they still wear this, says Diahara Adjanga, the mother of one girl said Thursday."They hit everyone ? even children."

The Islamists seized control of Timbuktu and the other northern provincial capitals of Gao and Kidal last April. During the nearly 10 months of their rule, the al-Qaida-linked extremists imposed harsh regulations for women and publicly whipped those who went in public without veils.

Across northern Mali, the Islamists stoned to death a couple accused of adultery, and amputated the hands of suspected thieves in actions reminiscent of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The French military launched an intervention to oust the Islamists from power in northern Mali on Jan. 11 and rapidly forced their retreats from the major towns in less than three weeks' time.

Fatouma Traore, 21, said that there was one commander who was especially brutal to the women in Timbuktu.

"We don't want the army to catch him. It's the women who want to arrest him so that we can kill him ourselves. ... Even if you're talking to your own blood brother on the stoop of your house, they hit you. Even if you are wearing the veil, and it happens to slip off, they hit you. This man, Ahmed Moussa, he made life miserable for women. Even an old grandmother if she's not covered up, he would hit her."

She picks up her 1-year-old niece and hoists her on one hip, saying: "We even bought a veil for this baby."

Timbuktu still looks mostly deserted, four days after it was liberated from Islamist rule.

The electricity and the phone networks remain cut. At night, the only illumination is the light given off by people's cell phones and the flashlights they have inside shops and hotels.

At the entrance to the town, there is a single checkpoint manned by a few Malian soldiers who flag down entering cars. Each car that is allowed to enter the city at night is signaled by a warning shot fired into the air.

A French armored personnel carrier on Thursday stood sentinel in the middle of the city. In the market, over a dozen shops owned by the city's Arab population have been gutted, pillaged by the population because the town's Arab citizens were suspected of having been allied with the Islamists.

Ousmane Halle, the mayor of Timbuktu, toured the city in a pickup truck on Thursday, flanked by three bodyguards. He had returned on a special flight after a temporary exile in the capital of Bamako, 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) southwest.

He said authorities were scouring the city for landmines, after reports that the Islamists planted explosives.

"We have roped off some streets and are preventing access to suspicious buildings," Halle said.

On Thursday, the Malian military said four soldiers were killed and five others wounded by a land mine on the road to Gao, fueling such fears.

Modibo Traore said the deaths took place in Gossi, a city that had been under the control of Islamists until recently.

In Timbuktu, French forces have been searching the town for land mines including at the city's largest mosque, where they were called in by the imams who said that the Islamists had left behind piles of dirt.

Lt. Sarah, a spokeswoman for the French military who could only be identified by her first name in keeping with military protocol, said so far nothing had been found.

Capt. Frederic, in charge of communications for France's 3rd Mechanized Brigade, which took part in the liberation of Timbuktu, said that when they took the city's airport on Monday the French found the runway was dotted with large hillocks of dirt.

Fearing that they contained hidden mines, French landmine specialists were called in, and they worked methodically to clear the 3- kilometer (1.8-mile)-long landing strip, he said.

However, Moussa Traore, a 26-year-old teacher in Timbuktu, said the sense of freedom already is overwhelming despite the uncertainty and security fears.

"We were totally deprived of our liberty. We couldn't listen to music, we couldn't play soccer. We couldn't wear the clothes we wanted. We couldn't hang out with the girls we liked," he said. "Now we can do everything ? we can listen to music, we can kick a ball, we can flirt. All I can do is say: Thank you God."

Police not amused by motorcyclist?s freeway marriage proposal

Police in California say they're mulling over charges against a motorcyclist who orchestrated the shutdown of a freeway outside Los Angeles so he could propose to his girlfriend.

The stunt, captured in a video posted to YouTube, occurred Sunday on the 10 Freeway in West Covina, Calif., 20 miles east of L.A.

The video shows several hundred motorcyclists slow to a stop and then surround a biker who promptly released a plume of pink smoke, removed his helmet and dropped to one knee to propose to his girlfriend, who had been riding on the back of the bike. She appeared to be shocked by the proposal, but she accepted it.

Some bikers pumped their fists and others did wheelies as they rode away ahead of the husband-and-wife to-be, with most exiting the freeway at the next off-ramp. Traffic, which had been backed up in both directions, soon began flowing again.

"Hector 'Tank' Martinez proposed to Paige Hernandez in front of his family and friends," the description on the YouTube video reads. "Big ups to the 710 Bikerz and everyone else who took part in this event."

The California Highway Patrol said on Wednesday it is investigating the incident and that felony charges for impeding traffic could be filed.

"It's dangerous when you do something like that," CHP Sgt. Kurt Stormes told the San Bernardino Sun. "You've got free-flowing traffic. Suddenly traffic comes to a stop and people don't know what happened, and that's when accidents happen."

Male Breast Reduction Operations Sag in UK, Statistics Show

Jan 29, 2013 7:00am

In Britain, breast reductions for men are out and fat injections for women are in.

Last year, 20 percent fewer British men than the year before sought surgery to treat gynecomastia, better known as ?moobs? or enlarged male breasts, according to just-released data from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

And for the first time ever, British women had more fat injected into them than they had removed. Demand for fat injection procedures that plump up the face and smooth out lumpy thighs and flat bums rose 13 percent, while former best sellers like liposuction and tummy tucks fell by more than 10 percent.

Face lifts, brow lifts and other anti-aging touch-ups for the face were up by double digits. Eye lid surgery as well as face and neck-lift operations both soared in popularity for both sexes in 2012.

Of the more than 43,000 Brits who went under the knife for some cosmetic renovation, 90 percent were women.

Meanwhile in America, the ratio of men to women having cosmetic surgery is virtually the same as in the UK. Like the British, Americans have shown growing fondness for anti-aging fat injections as well. Americans still love liposuction and tummy tucks, but the big rise was in chin lifts ? ?mentoplasty? to pick up and reshape the chin rose by 71 percent in 2011, according to American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

One thing remained the same on both sides of the pond: The most common cosmetic procedure by far was breast augmentation. In the U.K., nearly 10,000 women opted for breast enlargement last year. In the U.S., more than 300,000 women surgically enhanced their breasts in 2011, the last time American statistics were released.

Cosmetic surgery in both countries remained big business despite a sagging economy. Americans had nearly 14 million cosmetic procedures last year, to the tune of $10.1 billion. In Britain, the number of cosmetic procedures performed rose by a little over 5 percent.

Dr. Malcolm Roth, past president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said he thought the down economy might actually be helping the plastic surgery business despite the hefty price tag attached to many of the procedures.

?In the past, people were reluctant to take time off from work to recover from a cosmetic procedure for fear they might be seen as dispensable,? he said. ?But as time marches on and as more people are out of work, we?re seeing the pent-up demand from those who?ve decided it?s time to move forward and take care of themselves.?

Roth also speculated that the first wave of people who have been staving off the signs of aging with Botox and fillers are starting to find these minimally invasive procedures are no longer doing the trick.

?You can only camouflage the effects of aging for so long before surgery becomes the next option,? he said.

U.S. warns Antigua against "government-authorized piracy"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Monday warned the tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda not to retaliate against U.S. restrictions on Internet gambling by authorizing the "theft" of U.S. intellectual property.

"Government-authorized piracy would undermine chances for a settlement" in the Internet gambling case, said Nkenge Harmon, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative's office.

"It also would serve as a major impediment to foreign investment in the Antiguan economy, particularly in high-tech industries," Harmon said.

The World Trade Organization authorized Antigua in 2007 to suspend copyright protection on about $21 million of U.S. intellectual property annually after Washington failed to comply with a ruling against a U.S. ban on Internet gambling.

The Caribbean nation on Monday put the United States on notice that it intended to proceed with that action unless the two sides soon reach a negotiated settlement.

"The economy of Antigua and Barbuda has been devastated by the United States Government's long campaign to prevent American consumers from gambling online with offshore gaming operators," Antiguan Finance Minister Harold Lovell said in a statement.

At its height, the remote gaming industry in Antigua was the country's second largest employer, and leading international gaming economists estimated that the industry was worth more than $3.4 billion to the Antiguan economy, the country estimated.

Currently, less than 500 people are employed in the gaming sector, compared to more than 4,000 at its height.

"This economic devastation has been caused by the direct actions of the United States," the government statement said.

Facebook's Open Compute Project splits up monolithic server design with help from Intel, more

As much as it's important to have every component of a PC stuck together in a laptop, that same monolithic strategy is a major liability for server clusters: if one part breaks or grows obsolete, it can drag down everything else. Facebook and its Open Compute Project partners have just unveiled plans to loosen things up at the datacenter. A prototype, Atom-based rackmount server from Quanta Computer uses 100Gbps silicon photonics from Intel to connect parts at full speed, anywhere on the rack. Facebook has also garnered support for a new system-on-chip connection standard, rather affectionately named Group Hug, that would let owners swap in new mini systems from any vendor through PCI Express cards. The combined effect doesn't just simplify repairs and upgrades -- it lets companies build the exact servers they need without having to scrap other crucial elements in the process. There's no definite timeframe for when we'll see modular servers put to work, but the hope is that a cluster's foundations will stay relevant for years instead of months.

NASA: 2012 Was 9th Hottest Year on Record Worldwide

Last year was the ninth hottest year for the globe since 1880, according to new data released by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) today (Jan. 15).

Of the nine hottest years on record, eight have come since the year 2000, with 2005 and 2010 sharing the dubious title of hottest year on record. The new data reveal the alarming, long-term trend of global warming caused by human emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, climate scientists said.

"The planet is out of balance, there's more energy coming in than going out," said James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, during the press conference. "So therefore we can predict with confidence that the next decade is going to be warmer than the last one."

To calculate the global surface temperature, scientists at the NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York collect temperature data from 1,000 weather stations around the world and combine that with sea-surface temperatures derived from satellite imagery and data from Antarctic research stations. The global surface temperature last year was about 58.3 degrees Fahrenheit (14.6 Celsius), about 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.6 Celsius) above the average from 1951 to 1980.

While the planet overall experienced a warm year, the continental United States faced a particularly hot year that blew all previous records away. The average temperature, about 55.3 degrees Fahrenheit (12.9 Celsius) was 3.25 degrees Fahrenheight (1.8 degrees Celsius) higher than the average from 1951 to 1980. [The 7 Hottest Climate Change Stories of 2012]

"We've broken the record by more than one degree, that is quite impressive," said Thomas R. Karl, director, NOAA's National Climatic Data Center, Asheville, N.C., during a press briefing today. "It literally smashed the record."

The incredibly warm spring and summer in the United States led to early greening of vegetation, followed by extreme drought conditions that are still going on, Karl said in the press conference.

The findings emphasize that skyrocketing emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane are warming the planet. These gases trap heat in the atmosphere rather than letting it escape back into space.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen precipitously since the advent of the industrial revolution: In 1880, the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration was about 285 parts per million, while today, it is more than 385 parts per million, according to NOAA's data. Though that carbon dioxide can come from natural sources, most of it comes from the burning of fossil fuels to power modern society.

Natural variations in weather mean the spike in atmospheric carbon dioxide may not translate into a year-over-year, consistent increase in the planet's temperature, but each successive decade will probably be warmer.?

But one trend that will most probably occur next year is 2012's stunning loss of sea ice in the Arctic this summer and fall, Karl said. That can have global implications because the Arctic can affect weather patterns across the planet.

Aaron Swartz & A Culture of Denial: Depression & Suicide in Tech ...

Aaron Swartz & A Culture of Denial: Depression & Suicide in TechAaron Swartz, 26, an Internet developer and activist, committed suicide last week. The tech world has since been ablaze commenting and speculating on his life? and his death.

While many people point to the cause of his death connected to the overzealous prosecution by U.S. District Attorney Carmen Ortiz, it?s unlikely that a single thing led to his decision. If Aaron Swartz was like most of the 100 people every day who take their own lives in this country, the biggest thing that likely led to his death was untreated or under-treated depression.

Which comes as no surprise to people who knew him and have written about him. Nor after reading his own struggles with depression earlier in his life.

His passing is indeed a tragedy. But it?s time to realize that he lived and thrived in a technology sub-culture that mostly doesn?t understand ? or care much ? about mental illness.

While loved ones often search for answers after someone they know takes their own life, the answers are never very satisfying. In Aaron Swartz?s case, it appears that the jump to the cause and effect conclusion that his legal troubles led to his decision is overly simplistic. Young adults get into legal troubles all the time ? especially in certain disadvantaged parts of this country. The vast majority of them don?t take their own lives.

But we know that in most cases of suicide what is nearly always present is a history of clinical depression. And at the time the person has taken their life, it is depression that is either not being treated at all, or being treated inadequately. Swartz seemed to understand this, as he thought a great deal about depression, and linked to this description by George Scialabba:

Certainty that an acute episode [of depression] will last only a week, a month, even a year, would change everything. It would still be a ghastly ordeal, but the worst thing about it?the incessant yearning for death, the compulsion toward suicide?would drop away. But no, a limited depression, a depression with hope, is a contradiction. The experience of convulsive pain, along with the conviction that it will never end except in death?that is the definition of a severe depression.

Clinical depression ? like all mental disorders ? is exacerbated by stress. The more stress you have in your life, the worse the problem is usually going to get. Getting the book thrown at you by a federal prosecutor and facing the possibility of months (the last plea deal the U.S. Attorney was said to have offered was 6 months) or even years in jail is stressful. To a sensitive, brilliant person ? as Aaron Swartz was reported to have been ? it was probably beyond stressful.

Put those two together ? depression and a huge stressor ? and you have the recipe for a classic case of suicide.

And some people picked up on his down mood, as danah boyd said:

I knew he was struggling, but he was also a passionate activist and I genuinely thought that would see him through this dark period.

Which is a sentence we read time and time again from friends or family members after someone takes their own life. ?I knew he was struggling?? and yet? I thought he would be okay.

Silicon Valley is a Culture of Denial & High Stress

Not surprising, for people who are predisposed to depression, some work environments are not ideal. Wall Street, for example, is not a good place to work for a person with depression. Neither is Silicon Valley or really in any startup.

Startups, by definition, are high-pressure work environments, where a small group of people (usually young, white males) work 18- or 20-hour days to produce a product or service they believe will be The Next Big Thing (ala Facebook).

But because startups don?t live in a protected bubble, they?re going to suffer from the same human problems any company comprised of ordinary humans is going to suffer ? people with mental illness. After all, 1 in 10 people among us have one. Silicon Valley and tech startups are no different.

As investor Brad Feld notes,

?Many entrepreneurs don?t feel like they can talk openly about their depression, as they don?t want their investors, employees, or customers to know they are struggling with it,? he says. ?For anyone who has been depressed, not being able to be open about it with the people around you makes depression even harder to deal with.?

Startups think they are ?special? because they have some money and an idea. What they often don?t realize is that when it comes to the messy human things ? like emotions or health problems ? they are just like every one of us.

Fixing the Problem

Every tech startup, every VC firm, and indeed, every workplace has the power to help reduce future suicides. All they need do is to stop tolerating discrimination and prejudice against those who have a mental illness. If someone speaks up about their own depression or other mental illness, they should be met with the same open empathy you might give someone who was just diagnosed with cancer or diabetes. You make adjustments to help them make it through this period of their lives.

This sounds easy, but is harder than you might realize. Stigma still exists in many parts of our society, and often found among people who don?t think twice about health problems. There are still many ? too many ? who believe mental illness is a ?made up? problem and that people can just help themselves out of the problem if they only put their mind to it.

There is hope ? there is always hope. If anything good can come from a tragedy like this, perhaps it is helping others to better understand the vicious cycle of depression ? one that can ultimately lead to suicide for some.

The Emancipation Proclamation ? no movie tickets required

11 hrs.

While the fight to end slavery in the U.S. is winning hearts and minds at movie theaters ? on Thursday, ?Lincoln,? the movie, earned 12 Academy Award nominations ? travelers seeking a more intimate glimpse of history may want to head to a museum instead.

Signed 150 years ago this month, the Emancipation Proclamation that provides the backstory for the film is on display at museums and other cultural venues across the country.

It turns out that the document that ?freed the slaves? did not, in fact, end slavery in America. Rather, it was part of a process designed to bring the issue to the forefront in the Civil War. The Proclamation provided moral support for the Union cause, encouraged black men to enlist and set the stage for the passage of the 13th Amendment that would officially abolish slavery in the U.S.

As such, the Proclamation is more accurately seen as part of ?the entire emancipatory process that eventually freed 4 million people and brought the United States back together,? said Michelle Krowl, Civil War specialist at the Library of Congress.

Still, and technicalities aside, there?s no denying the significance of the document. ?It changed the nation,? said Howard Pollman, spokesman for The State Museum of Pennsylvania, ?and we?re still feeling the repercussions of it today.?

The following venues all offer unique takes on the story:

Library of Congress
While there are multiple versions and various copies of the Emancipation Proclamation still in existence, there was, of course, only one first draft, which was written by Lincoln in the summer of 1862. The handwritten document, which has not been on public display since 2009, can now be viewed at the Library of Congress in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition, ?The Civil War in America.? The Proclamation is on display until Feb. 18; the larger exhibition runs until June 1.

The State Museum of Pennsylvania
The State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg will showcase a copy of the Proclamation signed by Lincoln in 1864 as part of a special exhibit, "Emancipation: Lincoln and His Proclamation"?(Jan. 12?Feb. 3). Set among satirical cartoons, period posters and letters from soldiers, the exhibit ?provides context as to how the document was received at the time,? said Pollman. The exhibit will kick off with a special presentation by Harold Holzer, noted Lincoln biographer and chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation, on Friday, Jan. 11.?

Indiana State Museum
As noted above, the Proclamation didn?t officially abolish slavery in the U.S.; that wouldn?t happen for two more years with the adoption of the 13th Amendment. At the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, visitors can view signed?copies of both documents through March 2. A companion exhibit, ?Lincoln: Five Generations of an American Family,? will run Feb. 9?Aug. 4 and will chronicle the family?s oft-difficult history through official documents, family photographs and personal possessions.

National Museum of African American History and Culture
The immediate impact of the Emancipation Proclamation can be debated but its signing remains a seminal event that has echoed across the American landscape ever since. That?s the premise of "Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963,"?now on display through Sept. 15 at the Smithsonian?s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The first event took place 150 years ago; the second, 100 years later. Together, they represent key waypoints in the timeline of the American experience.

Traveling exhibits
Finally, for those who can?t make it to any of the above, the American Library Association (ALA) and National Constitution Center have partnered on a traveling exhibit that is currently visiting libraries and museums across the country.

Like the Spielberg film, ?Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War? goes beyond the Emancipation Proclamation to explore the political and constitutional battles over slavery, secession and civil liberties that raged during the Civil War. For tour dates and locations, visit the ALA website.
